25 Electric Circuits Interview Questions and Answers

An electric circuit is a closed route along which electric current flows. It usually contains 

  • Resistors, 
  • Capacitors, 
  • Inductors, 
  • Switches and 
  • Voltage (or) current source.

The three primary types of electric circuits are 

  • Series circuits, 
  • Parallel circuits and 
  • Series-parallel (combination) circuits.

A fuse is a safety device that melts and disconnects a circuit when the current exceeds a set limit.

According to Ohm’s Law, the current flowing through a conductor between the two points is directly proportional to the voltage and inversely proportional to the resistance.

Formula: V = I x R

Kirchhoff’s Current Law states that the algebraic sum of currents entering a junction is equal to the sum of currents leaving the junction.

Kirchhoff’s Voltage Law states that the sum of all voltages around a closed loop in a circuit is equal to zero.

Ground is a zero-voltage reference point in an electric circuit that serves as a current return path.

Resistance is an objection to the flow of electric current in a conductor measured in ohms (Ω).

Conductance is the inverse of resistance indicating how easily electric current flows via a material. It is measured in Siemens (S).

The watt (W) is the unit of electrical power, which equals one joule per second.

The equation for electrical power (P) is 

P = V x I

where 

V represents voltage and 

I represents current.

A resistor is a passive electrical component that limits or controls the current in an electric circuit.

The resistor color code is a series of colored bands that express the resistance value & tolerance on a standardized chart.

A capacitor is a component that accumulates electrical energy in an electric field & releases it as needed.

Capacitance is a capacitor’s ability to store electric charge per unit voltage expressed in farads (F).

An inductor is a wire coil that stores energy in a magnetic field if electric current flows through it.

Inductance is the ability of an inductor to resist changes in current flow, measured in henrys (H).

A mesh is a closed loop in a circuit that does not contain any other loops and is used for mesh current analysis.

The total resistance in a series circuit is the sum of all individual resistances.

RTotal = R1 +R2 +R3

The total resistance in a parallel circuit is given as:

1/RTotal = 1/R1 +1/R2 +1/R3

A short circuit happens if a low-resistance route allows excessive current to pass, resulting in overheating (or) damage to circuit components.

A voltage divider is a basic circuit that divides an input voltage into smaller voltages by utilizing a series of resistors.

A current divider divides the overall current into fractional currents in parallel branches based on their resistance.

A load is defined as any component or equipment that uses electrical power such as 

  • Lighting, 
  • Motors & 
  • Resistors.

A node is the point in a circuit where two (or) more circuit elements intersect.
