Selection Procedure
Use the four step procedure below to determine the correct enclosure rating for your application.
Step 1: Installation Location
- Indoor Only: Warehouses, offices, clean environments
- Outdoor Exposed: Rain, sun, temperature extremes
Step 2: Dust & Lint Protection
- None Required: Clean environment, no dust concern
- Moderate Protection: Manufacturing floor with flying dust
- High Protection: Dust-tight requirement (no ingress)
Step 3: Water / Washdown Exposure
- None: No water exposure
- Rain/Splash: Falling rain, occasional splash
- High-Pressure Washdown: Hose spray or pressure jets
Step 4: Environmental Corrosion Risk
- None: Standard industrial environment
- Moderate: Food processing, light chemical exposure
- High (Marine/Chemical): Saltwater, aggressive chemicals

NEMA 250 Enclosure Types
NEMA 1: General Purpose
Basic protection from personnel contact with hazardous parts. Most basic rating for office and warehouse environments.
Protects against touching hazardous components. Interior light, office environments. No water protection.

NEMA 2: Drip-proof
Protects against dripping non-corrosive liquids and falling objects.
Protects against dripping liquids. Indoor use, light industrial. No rain or hose protection.
Equivalent IP: IP22 Cost: Low
NEMA 3 / 3R: Rainproof / Weather-resistant
Protects against rain and ice formation but NOT dust-tight. Standard for outdoor electrical boxes.
Protects against falling rain. Withstands ice formation. Outdoor utility boxes, junction boxes. Not dust-tight (may have weep holes).

NEMA 4 / 4X: Watertight / Corrosion-Resistant
Withstands direct water spray (hose). NEMA 4X adds stainless steel construction for corrosive environments.
Withstands 65 gal/min water spray. Washdown areas, food processing. NEMA 4X: Stainless Steel (304/316), marine environments. Limited dust protection.

Protects against coal dust and oil mist from circulating oil cooling systems.

IEC 60529 IP Codes
IP Code Format: IP [Solid] [Liquid]: Example: IP65 = 6 (Dust-tight) + 5 (Water jets). A missing second digit means no liquid rating test was performed.

Important Note: IP codes do NOT test for mechanical operability under ice, corrosion resistance, or sustained rain protection. A NEMA 4X enclosure (IP66) is guaranteed stainless steel and ice-proof, but an IP66 enclosure might rust in saltwater. Always verify material specification when corrosion is a concern.
