This calculation assists to verify that the protective devices such as MCBs- miniature circuit breakers will disconnect the supply quickly enough during an earth fault & thereby ensuring electrical safety and compliance with electrical standards.

Earth fault loop impedance is the total impedance of the fault current path from the phase conductor through the fault and back to the source through the protective conductor & supply transformer. 

A lower impedance allows a higher fault current to flow which enabling protective devices to operate within the required disconnection time.

The calculator determines:

1). Instantaneous trip current (Ia) of the selected circuit breaker.

2). Maximum permissible earth fault loop impedance (Zs).

3). Compliance of protective device operation under fault conditions.

This is the nominal voltage between phase and earth. 

In many low-voltage (LV) systems, the value is 230 V.

The rated current of circuit breaker in amperes (A). 

Examples include 6 A, 10 A, 16 A, 20 A, 32 A and 40 A.

The calculator supports the following MCB characteristics that is

• Type B - Instantaneous trip current Ia = 5 x In

• Type C - Instantaneous trip current Ia = 10 x In

• Type D - Instantaneous trip current Ia = 20 x In

Step-1: Calculate the Instantaneous Trip Current

Ia = In x Multiplier

Where

Ia - Instantaneous trip current (A)

In - Rated current of the circuit breaker (A)

Step-2: Calculate the Maximum Permissible Earth Fault Loop Impedance

Zs = Uo / Ia

Where

Zs - Maximum permissible earth fault loop impedance (Ω)

Uo - Nominal phase voltage (V)

Ia - Instantaneous trip current (A)

Given

Uo = 230 V

Circuit Breaker Rating = 40 A

Breaker Type = Type B

Solution

Step-1

Ia = 40 x 5 = 200 A

Step-2

Zs = 230 / 200

Zs = 1.15 Ω
